《Festivals around the world》试讲稿

Good morning, everyone, how are you today!//Thank you, I am great. Hope you all have a good day. Let’s start. At first, we will enjoy a song. OK, the song is over. This is a happy song, am I right? So, are you familiar with this song? When can we hear it? Yes, we can hear it on Christmas Day. The name of this song is Jingle Bell. As we all know, Christmas is a very important festival in many foreign countries. We always compared it with our Spring Festival. Right? But, we celebrate them in different ways. Then, do you know their origin? How many festivals do you know around the world? //


Pr-reading:

OK, look at these pictures please. Yes, they are beautiful. Can you tell me what festivals are they? And how do you know about these festivals. Two minutes. You can talk about them freely.// Time is up. So, who wants to tell me your answer. Wow, so many students want to answer my question, you are so active. Who should I choose? Let me see.// How about Diana?// Thank you and sit down please. Exactly right. The first one is Spring Festival, the second one is Dragon Boat Festival, the third one is Christmas Day and the last one is Thanksgiving Day. 


While Reading:

   Turn to page 1. You are supposed to skim the passage and try to find out what’s  the passage mainly about? You may have two minutes.// Have you finished? Nice. Who want to be the first one? Oh, David, brave boy! Very logical answer, sit down please, David. So, the article mainly talks about different festivals at home and abroad, people have different ways to celebrate their own festival.(Skimming)

Look at the PPT. Here is a Matching Exercise. Would you please finish it by scanning the passage? // Have you find the answers? Tracy, can you do it?// Yeah, excellent work. Sit down please. Any other opinions? Oh, Ann, what’s your answer? Well done. Sit done please. Do you agree with her? Yes, all right. Tracy, don’t feel sad! Everybody makes mistakes. I am still proud of you.


Now, let’s look at the article together. Can you guess the meaning of “starve” through the context? Abby? //You said it means hunger. Nicely done. Starve means suffer from great hunger indeed. We always use this phrase starve to death.(Scanning)// Let’s move on. Please pay attention to this expression, “some festivals are held to honor the dead”, Can you understand the meaning of this sentence? Yes, it’s easy to understand. How can we use it? // You there. We can use it to describe the purposes of a festival. Wow, amazing, sit down please.Try to make a sentence using this pattern.// I noticed all of you have worked hard on it. Who want to have try? Alice, brave girl. // Great, sit down please. The Dragon Boat Festival is held to honor a famous poet. // Who can tell me the meaning of “in memory of”? A little bit difficult. Just have a try. Oh, Dean, my brave boy. // You said in memory of sb. means in order to remember sb. Excellent work, you got the right answer.So much for expressions and patterns. // I know that you have done a lot preparation before class. And we have talked about festivals a lot. So can you tell me why the Mid-autumn festival happy events?//Who want to have a try? Wow, so many Ss want to answer my question, who should I choose? How about hot potatoes? Ready, go. Gaby, how lucky you are! Give us your reasons, please. We always have family reunion on that day. Family members eat moon cakes together, and you like moon-cakes so much. Besides, people celebrate their harvest as well. So, the Mid-autumn festival must be a happy event. Amazing, very logical, acceptable and comprehensive answer. Thank you very much, sit down please. So, are we clear about the whole passage?// Great. (Intensive reading)


Post-reading:

    Six in a group. Supposed one of your foreign friend Thomas wants to celebrate our oncoming Dragon Boat Festival together with you. What would happen among you and Thomas? Try to create a short play in such a situation.Five minutes later. Each group shall show your results.// Time’s over. Show time. How about group 1. Go back to your seat. Do you like their performance? Yes, so funny. Many ridiculous things happened among them.


Summary:

Now, boy in the last row, would you please tell us what we have learnt today? // Exactly. We learn some language points and know more about festivals all over the world. So, we know that each country has their own festival, we have to pay more attention to our traditional festival. // How time flies! The bell is ringing. Did you enjoy your English travel? Glad you are happy. I am happy, too. You all have done a great job in today’s lesson!

一. Teaching objectives

1. Knowledge objectives:

1) Enable Ss to learn some basic reading strategies: skimming, scanning and intensive reading.

2) Students should have a general understanding of the main idea, the origin of some festivals and their ways for celebration.

1) Ss can find out the main idea of a passage through the learning of skimming.

2) Ss are able to get the detailed information, such as: find out the festivals appeared in the text, by themselves through the learning of scanning.

1) Ss can read and understand a passage by themselves through the learning of reading strategies. // Ss are able to read an article with the help of reading strategies, such as: skimming, scanning and intensive reading.

3) Ss can retell the text with the hint of key words.

3) Ss’ ability of listening and speaking can be improved/ enhanced through group work.


3. Moral objectives/Emotional objectives

1) Arouse students' interests in festivals and cultures around the world, especially in China.

2) Cultivate Ss' awareness of cross-culture by know different festivals around the world.

1. How to help Ss to master reading strategies to read an article.

2. How to help Ss to have a through understanding of the passage.

Ss can know the importance of our own traditional festival and cultivate Ss’ awareness of cross-cultured during this lesson.四. Teaching procedures


Step 1: Step 1 Leading-in(导入)

Broadcast a happy Christmas song, Jingle bell, and followed by two questions:

1.Are you familiar with this song?

2.When can we hear it?

Then, lead students to know that this is a Christmas song. And Christmas is a traditional festival in many western countries.

Justifications:

The purposes of this step are to create a relaxed study atmosphere and greatly stimulate students’ interests. Therefore, the topic of this lesson is naturally led in.


Step 2: Pre-reading

    Show the title pictures of the passage, encourage Ss to guess the main idea.

T: Look at the title and pictures. Can you try to guess what’s the passage mainly talks about?

Ss:......

Students will have a brain storm guessing the main idea of the passage which is conducive to Ss’ active participation and learning.


 Step 3: While reading

Task 1. skimming

Find out the main idea according to have a fast reading of the whole passage.

Then, ask students to answer my question, and compared their answer with the guessed one.

Justifications: Develop Ss' ability of searching for information by skimming. Help students to have a general understanding of the structure and content of the whole passage.


Task 2: Scanning

1. The teacher present picture of festivals mentioned in the text, and Ss matches festivals or activities with the corresponding pictures.

2. Finish a 1. Finish a matching exercise about which kinds of festivals are included in “Festivals to honor people”

 3. Guess the meaning of key words through the content. 

    At that time people would starve if food was difficult to find, especially during the cold winter months.

   The teacher should pay attention to different Ss, give help as soon as needed and encourage all Ss to join in activities.

4. True or false exercise:(判断对错)

1. People should go to clean graves and light incense on Obon.

2. At the Spring Festival, people not give children lucky money. 

Justifications:

This tasks aims to train students’ reading ability which requires students to get detailed information without reading the whole passage.


Task 3: Intensive reading

1. Find out the answer of deeper questions

Deeper  questions:(1) What is one important reason to have festivals and celebrations?

(2) Compare the festivals of the dead in Mexico, Japan and China. What things are similar? What things are different?

(3) Why mid-autumn festival happy events?

Retell the text by filling the following blanks:

festivals have many origins, some ______, some seasonal, and some for special ______ or events.

3. Help students to understand and analyze the long and difficult phrases and sentences.

new words and phrases(新词和词组): starve, in memory of ......

long and difficult sentences:(长难句)

1.At that time people would starve if food was difficult to find, especially during the cold winter months.

2.Some festivals are held to honor the dead or to satisfy the ancestors, .......

Justifications:

The goal of this task is to let Ss get further understanding of the article and check their reading results and the deployment of reading strategies.


Step 4: Post-reading

Ss will be divided into 6 groups. Create a situation that one of their foreign friend Thomas wants to celebrate the oncoming Dragon Boat Festival together with them.  Try to create a short play in such a situation. Ss are encourage to use sentence pattern they’ve learnt in this lesson.

Justification: In this activity, students’ creative thinking and sense of cooperation can be cultivated. Ss’ comprehensive ability of using language can be stimulated.


Step 5: Summary                   

Students will summarize language points, and I will make supplement timely. Students can talk about their feelings about this topic, and I will make supplement and brief comment timely.

Remind students to pay attention to our own festivals and culture, and cultivate Ss' cross-culture spirit.

Justifications:

Students can review the key points of this lesson through this step  and strengthen what they have learnt.  This step can also help to check whether Ss achieve the teaching objectives.


Step 6 : Homework:

     Students are encouraged to search more information about festivals at home and abroad and review this article. They are supposed to share their review next class.

Justifications:

    Give open homework is so important and necessary for Ss to make full use of the knowledge they have learnt in class. It will help Ss to use what they have learnt in daily life.
